About Maya Erica Forester

I has been striving to create images that can touch the heart and awaken a sense of wonder in the viewer. I have always had a love of rich, vibrant color and organic form. I have been exploring a painting technology called the “mischetechnik” ("mixed technique" in German) which involves creating an underpainting with white egg tempera or casein, and then adding color through a series of oil glazes. I also continue to work with oil pastel, often combined with oil paint and/or colored pencil.

I have found a kinship with the Visionary Arts movement which aims to bring spirituality back into our art. Among the key figures in the Visionary Arts movement are Ernst Fuchs, Alex & Allyson Grey, Robert Venosa, Maura Holden, Laurence Caruana, A. Andrew Gonzalez, Amanda Sage, and Martina Hofmann.

I attended the School of Visual Arts and the Swain School of Design and earned a BFA degree. I went on to do my masters work at Brooklyn College, CUNY, and attained my MFA in 1984. Among the teachers I studied with were Juan Gonzalez, Don Nice, John Gundelfinger (at SVA); Jacqueline Block, Benjamin Martinez, David Loeffler Smith (at Swain); Robert Henry, Lenart Anderson, and Philip Pearlstein (at Brooklyn College.)

A strong influence on my work has been my interest in shamanism which has lasted for over 25 years. I am currently studying the shamanic traditions of Peru and the Andes. I often uses the shamanic technique of entering into an altered state of consciousness as a way to acquire images for my paintings.
